Former Rangers star and academy coach Kevin Thomson has declared that sky is the limit for the Gers if Steven Gerrard can emulate what Walter Smith did during his time at Ibrox.

Thomson, who was a central figure under Smith at Rangers during their run to the UEFA Cup final in 2008, is now back at Ibrox as an academy coach.

The Light Blues have endured a promising start to the season, barring the only loss they suffered against Celtic before the international break, and have already secured Europa League football at least until Christmas.

Gerrard has played a crucial role in the resurgence of the Gers ever since taking over in the summer and the trend looks set to continue despite their recent setback against their rivals in the Old Firm derby.

Thomson admitted that it always helps when players have someone of Gerrard’s calibre at the top, but insisted that he needs to ensure the ideas get to everyone below him if he is to emulate the success Smith enjoyed at Ibrox.

“The fact they have a world class icon at the top of the tree, similar to us having Walter, will always bode well”, Thomson told the Evening Times.

“The manager has to make sure it (his attitudes) filter all the way down like a pyramid so that everybody is singing off the same hymn.

“It’s the same as what Walter had with us.

"If he can install that then the sky is the limit for the boys”, he added.

Rangers will be aiming to secure maximum points when they face Dundee at home in a Scottish Premiership clash on Saturday.
