Derek Ferguson has indicated he has heard rumours about investment coming into Rangers and believes if the Gers do have a cash injection they must go after the permanent signing of Ryan Kent.
Steven Gerrard's men are looking at a finish of second in the Scottish Premiership and another season without a trophy this term.
Thoughts have increasingly turned towards next season, when Rangers will be expected to push rivals Celtic all the way in the Scottish Premiership title race.
Kent, who is on loan from Liverpool, has been mooted as a permanent signing, but Rangers would need to spend big money to do the deal.
Ferguson says there has been talk of a cash injection into the club and believes if money does come then locking Kent down would make sense.
"It's a lot of money [for Kent] and it's reported you're talking £7m, have Rangers got that?" Ferguson said on Open Goal.
"There needs to be investment.
"You hear rumours that there is going to be investment.
"I'm not too sure.
"But if they had a few bob you'd certainly try and tie him down."
Rangers were busy in the transfer market last summer and Gerrard is keen to add extra quality over the coming months as he looks to make sure Celtic do not collect a ninth league title in a row.
