Rodon joined Rennes on loan from Tottenham last summer but has struggled to cement a place in the team, with the coach preferring non-loan players.

He made just 16 starts in Ligue 1 but did play the last two games of the season for Genesio’s side.

The Rennes coach did not give Rodon a run of games in the season but Genesio insisted that he has massive respect for the Welsh defender.

He is aware that the experience at Rennes has been difficult for the player and believes it would have been natural if the Spurs loanee had created problems behind the scenes.

But the Rennes boss praised the attitude and fight Rodon showed and insisted that he has been a complete professional on and off the pitch.

Genesio was quoted as saying by French outlet Foot Sur 7: “Joe also deserves a lot of respect. He is perhaps the one that deserves the most acclaim.

“For him it was difficult.

“I did not give him a gift, to anyone, and especially to him.

“He could have claimed things, he never did and he always kept an extraordinary state of mind.

“Tonight, he returns and he has been a top [professional] on and off the pitch.”

Rennes have an option to buy Rodon but he is likely to return to Tottenham this summer.
