Newcastle have a deal in place to sign the Italian midfielder from AC Milan in the ongoing transfer window.

The Magpies have agreed to pay a fee that could reach up to €80m for the signature of the 23-year-old midfielder as they look to complete what would be a stunning coup.

A delegation from Newcastle are in Cluj to put the midfielder through his paces and arrived at the Italy Under-21s team hotel earlier today.

And according to Italian daily Gazzetta dello Sport, Tonali has checked into a local clinic Cluj and is currently undergoing a medical overseen by the Newcastle staff.

He has temporarily left the Italy team hotel and also met Steve Nickson, Newcastle’s chief scout, in Romania.

Newcastle are hopeful of a clean bill of health from their top midfield target and are not anticipating any problems.

He is expected to go on holiday after the tournament and after joining Newcastle.

His representatives have already agreed on personal terms and will sign a six-year contract worth €8m per year.
