Sochaux forward Modibo Mariga, who tried in vain to push through a move to English Premier League outfit Newcastle United over the summer, has delighted in answering his critics on the pitch.

Maiga was superb in Sochaux’s 3-0 victory against Toulouse in Ligue 1 yesterday and believes that his performance was perfect to silence those fans that have turned against him.

"It’s a good answer to people who do not know football", blasted the Mali international.

"This will make them shut their big mouths", added Maiga, going on to say: "And it is far from over."

The 24-year-old split Sochaux fans when pushing hard to be allowed to join Newcastle, who saw a substantial bid for the hitman rejected.

On the one hand it was appreciated that at St. James’ Park Maiga would earn wages that far outstrip what he takes home at Sochaux, but the player was still expected to respect the contract he signed with the club in 2010 when arriving from Le Mans.

Maiga also found himself excluded from a Europa League travelling party and missed training, finding himself ordered to train with the club’s reserves as a result. He has since returned to the first team and made an impact however.
