Ivory Coast striker Arouna Kone’s apparent desire to leave Wigan Athletic for Everton has been given the club’s blessing by manager Owen Coyle.

Kone joined the Latics last year, and had a relatively successful season under Roberto Martinez with 34 Premier League games and 11 goals, even as they eventually succumbed to the relegation battle.

He also managed to find the net twice in four FA Cup games, in a run that saw Wigan beat Manchester City 1-0 at Wembley in the final.

And with Martinez moving on to the Everton dugout as David Moyes’ replacement, Kone is understood to be very keen on joining his mentor there.

New Latics boss Owen Coyle has been given the backing of his chairman Dave Whelan to find new players and Kone’s desires, therefore, make him surplus to requirements at the DW Stadium.

"It’s not rocket science to say that Arouna Kone will probably leave at some point this week", Coyle was quoted by the BBC as saying. "There have been a number of offers in for him.

"There is no problem. He goes with our blessing because I need players who need to be at Wigan. If his heart’s elsewhere then he’s no good to me.

"I’m led to believe through his representative that Everton is the club he wants to join."

The 29-year-old joined Wigan from Spanish side Levante, having enjoyed time at Sevilla, Hannover and PSV Eindhoven as well in his career.
