Everton have rekindled the Merseyside duel against Liverpool for Ajax star Toby Alderweireld by sending chief scout Kevin Reeves to Holland to have a look-in.
Liverpool target Alderweireld was once also on Norwich City’s radar, but the Canaries were politely turned down.
Alderweireld has since stated that Champions League football is not a major requirement for him, and most of the club staff at Ajax expect the centre-back to leave this summer.
While he is not averse to signing a new contract at Ajax, Alderweireld’s agent Soren Lerby was quoted by Dutch newspaper Het Belang as saying: "It is true that Everton came forward for Alderweireld.

"Though there are other concrete directions, Toby must now look at which team he finds the most challenging."
Everton were reported to have made contact with Lerby in mid-July, and the recent statements seem to confirm their interest further.
Reeves is understood to have already seen Alderweireld in action during the Johan Cruyff Shield clash last week, which Ajax won 3-2 against AZ Alkmaar.
And the scout also managed to catch the first game of the new Eredivisie season as Ajax romped home 3-0 winners over Roda JC Kerkrade.
Alderweireld managed the full 90 minutes in both games, further proving his abilities despite a post-season period that saw him undertake international commitments with Belgium.
