AC Milan will be hoping to fend off interest from Atletico Madrid in starlet Bryan Cristante, who was on the radar at Chelsea.

Cristante became subject to interest from Chelsea when he was just 16 years old, though Milan were able to keep hold of him.

Cristante, now 18, made his Milan debut in 2011 and according to Sky Italia, Atletico Madrid are monitoring his situation with contact expected in the next few days.

Andrea Berta, a director at Atletico Madrid, is understood to be keenly following the midfielder who has already made a Serie A appearance this season – albeit just five minutes in a goalless draw against Chievo.

However, Milan will not be overly interested in selling off Cristante, deemed a star of the future.

Indeed, Chelsea under then-manager Andre Villas-Boas had been ready to make an approach in January 2012, though nothing concrete ever came off it.

This January could prove crucial for Cristante, who is an Italy Under-19 international and who is contracted with Milan until 2018.

He has a total of just two appearances in the Milan senior shirt, while he recently scored in both legs of a group-stage game against Barcelona in the UEFA Youth League.
