Michael Essien's potential move to AC Milan took another step forward today with his agent travelling to Italy for discussions over the wantaway Chelsea midfielder.

Essien's agent Fabien Piveteau had already made clear the 31-year-old will seek greener pastures this winter, despite spending several years under Jose Mourinho.

Essien was on loan at Real Madrid with Mourinho last season, but has been on the fringes during the Portuguese's return to Chelsea.

And according to Sky Italia, Piveteau will attempt to complete the deal today itself, with Essien desperate to turn out for Ghana at the World Cup.

The defensive midfielder has made just two starts out of his five Premier League appearances this season.

Piveteau had previously described Milan as a great opportunity for his client, even though Mourinho remained non-committal about whether Essien would actually leave Stamford Bridge.

"We have not yet opened any direct talks with AC Milan, but this does not mean he cannot move to Italy", Piveteau said earlier this month.

"We are fascinated by the Milan hypothesis and, from here to the end of the month, we want to explore and understand all the requirements."
