AC Milan are awaiting Chelsea's response over Michael Essien, with his agent set to meet with the Blues after finding agreement at the San Siro.

According to Sky Italia, Milan are more than happy to have Essien on board from the winter onwards, which is expected to culminate in a permanent deal.

Essien's agent Fabien Piveteau had met with Milan's representatives yesterday and will now attempt to tie up any loose ends at the Chelsea corner.

Essien's Chelsea contract will run out in 2015, while it is not yet clear if the Ghanaian will be bought outright this month itself or simply sent out on an initial loan deal.

Chelsea are expected to provide their take today, with Essien keen to find regular game time ahead of the World Cup.

He has spent several years under Jose Mourinho – including in a loan spell at Real Madrid – but has been used sparingly at Stamford Bridge this season.

The 31-year-old has made just two starts in the Premier League in his five appearances and Mourinho has remained impassive over the midfielder's situation.

"I offer nobody – not Michael, not nobody [guaranteed game time]," Mourinho said in early January.

"I understand that players think about national team, the World Cup and playing regularly, but my players have to think of the team before the players. Michael knows that perfectly."
