Barkas, 29, joined the Bhoys from AEK Athens in 2020 but failed to live up to the Glasgow giants’ expectations.

He was shipped out to FC Utrecht last year and the Greek international was made the number one at the Dutch outfit.

He was an integral part of Utrecht’s campaign this season and made 38 appearances in all competitions for the Domstedelingen side, while keeping 12 clean sheets.

The Greek shot-stopper now asserted that his contract with Celtic has been rescinded and he is ready to deliberate on his future.

Thanking his former side, he further added he can now start thinking about next season and revealed his wishes to stay at Utrecht beyond the summer.

That’s right”, Barkas told RTV Utrecht while confirming his exit from the Parkhead outfit.

My manager has worked hard for that. I also want to thank Celtic for it.

I can now start thinking about next season. I have to start making choices.

It feels like my family here at Utrecht, I don’t know if I will find that elsewhere.

Of course, I want to stay, but that’s not always easy. I have said that my agent has to start talks with FC Utrecht.

But we have to wait a few days now, take a rest and think about it.

But whatever happens, Utrecht will always be my family.

Now all eyes will be on the 29-year-old custodian whether he can extend his stay at Utrecht beyond the summer or plies his trade elsewhere.
