The Dutch defender spent last season on loan at Schalke but injuries only limited him to just nine Bundesliga appearances.

He is not part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans at Liverpool for the upcoming campaign and he is looking for a new club this summer to continue his development.

As many as three German clubs are interested in the centre-back but according to Sky Deutschland, Mainz are leading the race to sign the defender.

And it has been claimed that the Dutchman has arrived in Germany to finalise his next move.

He has permission from Liverpool to negotiate with clubs for a move away from the Reds this summer.

Mainz sporting director Christian Heidel is pushing to get a deal over the line to sign Van den Berg as soon as possible.

More talks are scheduled between the two clubs with both a loan and permanent deals being possibilities.

Dutch giants Ajax are also interested in the defender but for the moment, it seems he will be in Germany again next season.
