Former Portsmouth star Guy Whittingham has urged the Pompey players to be commanding at Exeter City on Friday to show everyone that they are ready for the fight.

Portsmouth suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bristol Rovers at the Mem on Boxing Day after a draw against Fleetwood Town at home at the weekend.

Two back-to-back disappointing results have reduced the lead over Peterborough United and Bolton Wanderers to four points, with the latter having a game in hand.

Now Portsmouth are set to travel to St. James’ Park on Friday to take on Exeter City and Whittingham believes that Pompey will need to turn things around by taking the game to the Grecians.

He also stressed that the Exeter game is an opportunity for Portsmouth’s players to put their disappointing run of form to bed and show the other teams that they are ready to fight.

They have to go down there and change things around”, Whittingham said on BBC Radio Solent.

“You have a couple disappointing results; you have one point from six; the gap is closed.

“You have got to go and show people that you are up for fight and you are willing to take on the responsibility for the disappointment over the last two games.

“Go there, be commanding and take the game to Exeter.”

Portsmouth have not lost their last four visits to St. James Park and it remains to be seen whether John Mousinho’s side will be able to return to winning ways against a relegation-threatening Exeter City.
