Newcastle United are unlikely to succeed in their interest in bringing Michael Edwards as the replacement for Manchester United chased Dan Ashworth, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Ashworth has made it known to Newcastle that Manchester United want him and he is keen on becoming the sporting director at Old Trafford.

The two clubs are hoping to reach an agreement for the 52-year-old’s move to Old Trafford next week and Newcastle are now looking at options to replace him.

Former Liverpool sporting director Edwards has been linked with being of interest to the Magpies and his standing in the game is high.

However, it has been claimed that Newcastle’s potential attempt to bring him in is unlikely to succeed.

Edwards is a long-shot for Newcastle as he is not interested in returning to football in the sporting director or director of football capacity.

He recently rejected overtures from Liverpool to return to Anfield to shape the post-Jurgen Klopp era at Anfield.

The highly-rated operator is now focused on running his own company that offers consultancy services to football clubs.

His work behind the scenes at Liverpool earned huge praise but he has shown no inclination to work in similar roles since leaving the Reds in 2022.

Whether Newcastle make a move for Edwards and look to convince him to change his mind remains to be seen.
