Michael Edwards admires Newcastle United’s project and Eddie Howe, but in bad news for the Magpies, he does not want to become their sporting director, according to the Chronicle.

Newcastle have placed Dan Ashworth on gardening leave after he informed the club that he wants to leave.

Manchester United and Newcastle are set to negotiate his exit as the 52-year-old prepares for life at Old Trafford.

Newcastle are set to make it tough for Manchester United to have their way in negotiations but are now also looking for a new sporting director.

Edwards has been a target and the former Liverpool sporting director is an admirer of the work being done at Newcastle and the way Howe is performing at the club.

However, despite having admiration for Newcastle, Edwards is not ready to become their sporting director.

The much-heralded football executive recently turned down a return to Liverpool and has rejected many more high-profile positions.

He is keen to continue his focus on Ludonautics, a sports advisory firm dedicated to helping clubs make better decisions through access to insightful statistical analysis.

Edwards has no interest in becoming a sporting director again and has continued to reject offers.
