Portsmouth defender Conor Shaughnessy believes that promotion to the Championship would be amazing and understands how much the fans want it.

With another 12 games remaining before the curtain falls on Portsmouth’s 2023/24 League One season, Pompey are well-placed to earn promotion.

They currently enjoy a six-point lead at the top and have been on a four-game winning run.

The excitement in and around Fratton Park has started to build up and Shaughnessy is not showing any hesitation to speak about it.

According to the Leeds United academy graduate, the players in the team want the promotion as much as the fans and are giving everything for it.

“It [promotion] would be massive I think”, Shaughnessy told BBC Radio Solent.

“You can see how much it means to me and all of the players on the pitch.

“Every weekend I feel like I and the other ten players on the pitch at the time give absolutely everything for the club and for the fans.

“We see how much it means to them and we want it every bit as much as them.”

It would be Shaughnessy’s first promotion if Portsmouth manage to achieve it and he admits he would be amazing.

“It [promotion] will be my first one and so it would be an amazing feeling. Something we are obviously, aiming to do.

“But like I said [we will] take it one game at a time.”

Portsmouth will hope to build on their winning run when they take on Charlton Athletic in what will be their final game of the month on Saturday.
