Richard Keys has revealed that he has information that Xabi Alonso has decided to take the Liverpool job, with an agreement in place.

Liverpool are looking for a manager to replace Jurgen Klopp at the helm following the German’s decision to step aside at the end of the season.

The Reds have recently revamped their off pitch department with Michael Edwards joining as football CEO, while Richard Hughes is the new sporting director.

Bayer Leverkusen coach Alonso is the man Liverpool want as their new boss, but he has also been interesting Bayern Munich.

Leverkusen are holding out hope that Alonso will stay, but Keys insists matters are already decided, barring an unexpected hiccup.

The veteran broadcaster, reflecting on the fact he told Manchester United to get Alonso last year, wrote on his blog: “My critics said ‘No. what’s he done? It’s too soon’. Really? Well 3 months on it’s not too soon for Liverpool to have got him to agree to become their next manager.

“As I always say when I share news like this – these big deals can always go wrong.

“There’s a lot to go wrong when they’re blue riband, whether it’s a player or coach/manager involved, but my information is that Alonso has decided on Liverpool.”

Alonso, a former Liverpool midfielder, currently has Leverkusen sitting on top of the Bundesliga table and cruising to the league title.

The Spaniard has made a big splash in the hot seat and could now be set for one of the toughest jobs in football in the shape of Liverpool.
