Former England star Ian Wright has questioned Gareth Southgate’s decision to not give Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite a chance during the international break.

Branthwaite has been in superb form for Everton this season and has been tipped to join one of the bigwigs of the Premier League in the summer.

His performances earned him a call-up to the England squad for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in the recently concluded international break.

However, the Everton defender remained an unused substitute in both games and did not get an opportunity to impress ahead of the summer’s European Championship.

Former striker Wright is surprised that the young defender did not even get a look in either of the games.

He believes Southgate squandered an opportunity to take a closer look at Branthwaite in the two friendlies.

The former England striker took to X and wrote: “How did Jarrad Branthwaite get zero minutes across the two friendlies?

“Doesn’t make sense.

“Perfect opportunity to have a look at him.”

England have friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland ahead of the European Championships in June.

Branthwaite will want to make sure he is on the plane to Germany for Euro 2024 this summer.
