Liverpool are ready to launch a swoop for Ajax playmaker Christian Eriksen in the summer as they firm up their long-held interest in the Denmark international.

According to Voetbal International, the Reds have decided to try for the 20-year-old, despite the fact that there will be much competition for the player’s signature and that Ajax will demand a substantial fee for his services.

Ajax have offered Eriksen a new contract – his current deal expires in 2014 – but he has refused to consider signing it until at least the summer, with the Dutch club’s director of football Marc Overmars admitting he feels the midfielder is waiting to see what offers present themselves.

Eriksen has been linked with a number of clubs, including Manchester United, Inter and Valencia.

The player was quick to insist though, when talk of Liverpool being keen surfaced, that he found interest from the Merseyside giants "flattering".

Now Liverpool will see if Eriksen is prepared to move to Anfield.

Ajax meanwhile are still hopeful they can persuade Eriksen to remain at the Amsterdam ArenA.

A departure this summer is the likely course if he does not sign, with the Dane reassuring Ajax that he will not leave the club on a free transfer.

He has made 21 appearances in the Eredivisie so far this season, scoring six goals and providing eight assists.
