Russell Martin has expressed his astonishment at seeing he had not been sacked as Southampton boss was classed as breaking news.

Saints have had a poor start to the season in the Premier League and lost a crunch game at home to Leicester City last weekend.

Many feel they will struggle to survive in the top flight this term and increasingly there has been scrutiny on Martin’s approach and job as manager.

The Southampton boss knows he is under pressure, but has shrugged off the speculation and insists he was stunned to see him keeping his job was being classed as breaking news.

He admits he finds the sack race focus fascinating.

“I walked into training and saw that Sky Sports had me still being in my job as breaking news”, Martin told a press conference.

“How is that breaking news?

“I find the circus fascinating.

“Everyone is desperate to see the first manager sacked.

“There was never a conversation about Leicester being do or die.”

Southampton are currently preparing for a visit to the Etihad Stadium to take on champions Manchester City and Martin would likely rate coming back down south with even a point from that trip to be a success.
