Neil Warnock believes Aberdeen can rival Celtic and Rangers if they get their recruitment right.

Warnock signed off on his spell as interim Aberdeen boss on Saturday by leading the Dons to a Scottish Cup victory over Kilmarnock at Pittodrie.

The experienced manager has struggled to get Aberdeen producing consistent results during his tenure and is standing aside as the club close in on a permanent boss.

Warnock is leaving with an element of regret as he admits he would have liked to have had a full year and two transfer windows in the job.

He is convinced that it is possible for Aberdeen to rival Celtic and Rangers if they can just get their recruitment right.

“I wish I’d been here a year and had two windows, and Dave [Cormack] supported me like he does”, Warnock told RedTV.

“I think you could rival the top two teams without splashing fortunes, if you get the right players in.”

Warnock leaves with Aberdeen now through to the last four in the Scottish Cup, with the competition widely viewed as an opportunity to save a disappointing season.
