Manchester United are just one step away from announcing David de Gea as their new goalkeeper.

The youngster’s proposed move from Atletico Madrid to Old Trafford was one of the worst kept secrets in football, with even United boss Sir Alex Ferguson confirming the deal was going ahead.

However, it has taken some time for the final details to be ironed out, but the Spaniard was present in Manchester yesterday to undergo his medical.

De Gea will cost the Premier League champions a fee of £18.3M and instantly becomes United’s first choice shot-stopper.

The former Atletico man has big shoes to fill with the retirement of Edwin van der Sar, but is not fazed by the task in front of him and is understood to be confident about making an impression with the English giants.
