Midfielder Alberto Aquilani has become resigned to the prospect of returning to Liverpool.

The former Roma man spent last season on loan at Juventus, but the Bianconeri were unwilling to meet Liverpool’s asking price to make the deal permanent and Aquilani now looks likely to head back to Anfield despite readily admitting that he would prefer to stay in Italy.

"I’ll be back at Liverpool with great enthusiasm", Aquilani told Sky Sport, "I have no problem."

And the midfielder went on to admit that returning to Anfield had not been something he had sought.

"It is true that I did not want to return to Liverpool."

Aquilani faces an uncertain future under Reds boss Kenny Dalglish, with the Scot appearing to regard the midfielder as surplus to requirements. Dalglish has already added Jordan Henderson from Sunderland, with Blackpool schemer Charlie Adam also expected to arrive.

The Italian’s first team chances thus look slim.
