Reports from Spain suggest Tottenham Hotspur are in the midst of negotiations with Real Madrid for Lassana Diarra.

The French midfield enforcer is surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu and was left out of the club’s pre-season tour of North America.

And Los Blancos informed Diarra and his agent that a bid of €20M would be enough to ensure he played his football elsewhere in 2011/12.

However, despite serious interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray, Diarra has stayed put in the Spanish capital.

That could change though if Spurs boss Harry Redknapp makes a concrete bid.

The English side have tracked Diarra throughout the summer, but Redknapp is hamstrung by budget restraints at White Hart Lane and is struggling to bring new talent to the club.

Spurs look likely to make an official bid for Diarra within the next week, but it seems certain to fall well below the €20M demanded by Jose Mourinho’s side.

Diarra, who has had spells in the English Premier League with Chelsea, Arsenal and Portsmouth, is also on a lucrative contract at Real Madrid and may well have to take a cut in wages to end up at White Hart Lane.
