Europa League hopefuls Stoke City have completed the signing of defender Matthew Upson on a free transfer.

Upson was available after his release from relegated West Ham United this summer and has inked a two-year deal with the Potters.

An England international, Upson will be looking to make an impact with Tony Pulis’ men and push for further international recognition.

"This is a fantastic deal when you consider the quality and the experience of the lad", said Stoke boss Pulis.

Upson himself is delighted with the move, although he admits battling for a spot in the Stoke side will not be easy.

"There is a lot of competition for places here and that is part of the attraction.

"I will relish the fight for a spot because it draws the best out of players."
