Midfield enforcer Jean Makoun is on the verge of leaving Aston Villa for Greek giants Olympiacos.

Makoun was taken to Villa Park by former manager Gerard Houllier, but has jumped at the chance to head to Olympiacos after featuring only sporadically for the English Premier League outfit.

The Cameroon international arrived in Athens yesterday and immediately met with Olympiacos officials, where he agreed the terms of his proposed move.

Makoun will sign a one-year loan deal with the Greek champions, with the option for Olympiacos to make his arrival a permanent one for a fee of €4M at the end of the season.

Today the 28-year-old is due to undergo a medical and, all being well, should then sign a contract with Ernesto Valverde’s men.

The former Lille player cost Villa around £6M to snap up from Lyon in the January transfer window and was tipped to be a perfect fit for Premier League football.

He will now hope to make his mark in Greece.
