Agreement between Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid for the transfer of Luka Modric has edged closer after the two clubs engaged in a round of further talks, according to Spanish daily Marca.

Spurs have indicated that two options would be acceptable: either €40M in cash or €35M plus a further €7M to come in add-ons dependent upon Modric’s performances at the Bernabeu and Real Madrid’s displays in his time at the club.

Los Blancos have firmly rejected the first option, with a straight €40M transfer fee deemed too expensive in the Spanish capital.

However, a €35M fee plus add-ons is acceptable in Madrid, but only if the add-ons are dropped to €5M instead of €7M.

Now just €2M separates the two clubs from coming to an agreement over Modric – a small obstacle that is expected to soon be overcome.

The Croatian playmaker himself has already agreed a contract with Real Madrid and he will earn €4.5M net per season.

Only three players at the Bernabeu will earn more than Modric – these being Iker Casillas, Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.
