New Newcastle United signing Yohan Cabaye has urged his former team-mate at Lille, Gervinho, to join him at St. James’ Park.

The Ivory Coast forward is expected to follow in Cabaye’s footsteps by leaving the Ligue 1 champions this summer, and Newcastle boss Alan Pardew is known to be a big fan of the speedy player.

And with midfielder Cabaye, who recently completed a £4.3M move to Newcastle, signing a five-year contract with the Premier League outfit, Pardew has an important weapon to convince Gervinho to make the same move.

"It would be a good thing for both of us if Gervinho would rejoin me here at another club where we could play together again", Cabaye told RMC, stepping up the charm offensive.

The biggest stumbling block to Newcastle’s signing of Gervinho at present appears to be a lack of Champions League football. The Ivory Coast forward is known to be keen to play in Europe’s top club competition, especially with Lille having worked hard to qualify last season.

Nevertheless, there remains the possibility that Cabaye’s presence at St. James’ Park could yet tip the balance in the Magpies’ favour.
