Mauro Zarate’s brother Sergio Zarate has poured cold water on talk from Italy suggesting the Lazio striker was on his way to English Premier League giants Arsenal.

The Argentine hitman has been mentioned as a target of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, and reports from the Italian capital made it clear that Lazio were ready to deal over Zarate.

The player’s brother is sure that this talk is false however and he has not been party to any negotiations with Arsenal, but did admit that Zarate needed to be a key part of Lazio’s plans this season to be happy. The striker watched Lazio’s 6-0 Europa League demolition of Rabotnicki from the stands.

"I’m on holiday in Europe and I heard that someone went to England to talk to Arsenal. It’s all false", said Sergio Zarate.

"I am in Nice and on Monday I will be in Italy.

"I spoke this morning with Mauro and was disheartened. I also know that tonight he will be sent to the stands. Why? Just ask [Edy] Reja, there is no negotiation on the transfer market.

"The reason for his exclusion is purely technical, the choice was made by the coach.

"As for the future, I can tell you that Mauro wants to stay at Lazio and he keeps repeating this. But he wants to stay to play and be taken into account, not continually kept on the bench."
