Manchester City are close to signing midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

The former Manchester United man, who is currently a free agent after his contract with the Reds expired this year, underwent a medical yesterday.

The Citizens are confident of completing the move by the end of the transfer window tonight, with Hargreaves eager to take on this new challenge at his former club’s rivals.

Despite a successful seven-year stint at Bayern Munich, 42 caps as an England international and winning both the England Player of the Year and England Player of the World Cup awards in 2006, the 30-year-old failed to shine as a Manchester United man.

Hargreaves suffered a string of injuries at Old Trafford and clocked up just seven minutes of first-team football in the last two seasons.

The midfielder was linked with West Brom and Toronto FC earlier this summer.
