Jo Tessem has pointed out that Southampton star Sekou Mara is good with his touch but stressed that the forward lacks pace.

The 21-year-old forward joined Southampton in the summer of 2022 and this season he has played a bit part role for the Saints so far.

Russell Martin gave the Mara his second league start this season against West Bromwich Albion on Friday and despite not registering a goal in his name, the forward helped Saints seal a 2-0 victory.

Tessem highlighted that Mara is good with his touch and stated that on the ball, the Saints star does not rely on any sort of trickery and plays simple passes.

However, the ex-Southampton star pointed out that Mara lacks a little pace, which he believes is important for a forward player.

“His touch is so good and they are simple; they are not difficult touches”, Tessem said on BBC Radio Solent.

“He does not do any trickery or anything; he stops it and plays it, stops it and plays it, first touch or direct pass and that sets everything else up.

“What he lacks a little bit is pace.

‘He does lack pace and that is so vital in football as an offensive player, but he gets into good positions.”

Mara has scored six times in all competitions this season, while registering two assists in the process and he will be hoping to get into the starting line-up for the Hull City game on Tuesday.
