Wayne Rooney has revealed that he is excited about Louis van Gaal’s appointment as the new manager at Manchester United and believes the club will challenge for the title next season.

Van Gaal was appointed as the new Manchester United manager with Ryan Giggs as his number two on Monday, a little less than a month after David Moyes was sacked.

Rooney admits that he hasn’t spoken with the new manager until now, but is excited about the things he has heard about the Dutchman from various quarters.

"He's got a great track record and I'm sure he will come in and do a great job for us", the 28-year-old told the BBC.

"I don't know how he works, I haven't met him yet but just hearing little things about him, it's exciting for us as a team.”

The England international admits that the squad failed to reach the required heights this season but believes that they can again challenge for the title next season.

“This year was not good enough, we need to be fighting for that title."

Manchester United won the Charity Shield at the start of the campaign in August and that remained their only piece of silverware for this season.
