England boss Roy Hodgson has hit back at Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who criticised the Three Lions for their approach with Daniel Sturridge, which saw the striker pick up a thigh injury on international duty.

Rodgers stated his belief that Sturridge should have had an extra day to recover from the match he played with England and would have had a recovery day if the same had happened at Liverpool.

Hodgson has defended England's approach though and insisted if every player had to have extra rest days the Three Lions would virtually not train at all.

"We always try to do that [follow the club’s training programme]. The last thing you want is to get injuries in training, even more so as an international manager because you feel a responsibility to the clubs", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"People need to consider that we have such a shortage of time. On this particular occasion we had two days and two training sessions to try and hone a very different way of playing.

"If I'm going to be put under pressure as the England manager in future to give every player two days off every time they play, then we won't train at all quite frankly", he added.

Sturridge is still out injured, though could be involved when Liverpool play West Brom this weekend.

He is not however in Hodgson's England squad for games against San Marino and Estonia.
