Eddie Howe’s side are ready to make signings all over the pitch as they bid to fight their way away from the Premier League drop zone; they are close to announcing the arrival of Kieran Trippier.

Cantwell, who faced issues with playing-time at Norwich this season before Dean Smith arrived, is now firmly on Newcastle’s radar as a potential number 10.

Newcastle have been in touch with Norwich to check what would be needed to take the player to St James’ Park this month.

They have been informed about the level of fee which would be needed and are now mulling whether to make a bid.

Cantwell only has 18 months on his contract and Norwich would be likely to earn a bigger fee from selling him this month than in the summer.

It is suggested that Norwich value Cantwell at between £15m and £20m.

The midfielder has told Norwich that he is not looking to sign a new contract with the club.
