Smithies made 31 appearances in all competitions during the 2021/22 season for the Bluebirds, conceding 46 goals and maintaining five clean sheets.

Bournemouth returned to the Premier League by finishing in the second of two automatic promotion places in the Championship last season.

Cardiff, by contrast, finished the season in 18th place in the Championship, 16 points above the relegation zone.

The 32-year-old will be training with Scott Parker’s side ahead of the new season, but it remains to be seen if he is offered a deal that will keep him at Dean Court for the upcoming season.

Smithies brings more experience to the table than the Cherries’ current young goalkeeping pair of Mark Travers and Will Dennis.

Parker has overseen two promotions from the Championship, with Fulham and most recently with Bournemouth, and he will hope for better luck in the top flight with the Cherries.

Fulham suffered relegation the season after their return to the Premier League under Parker’s stewardship and he will look to break that cycle with Bournemouth.
