Sunderland manager Mike Dodds feels his Black Cats side were better than Southampton for periods of the game at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Southampton led 2-0 in the Championship clash before then being pegged back by Sunderland, with matters all square in the 71st minute.

Russell Martin’s side then grabbed another two goals to take all three points in a 4-2 victory.

The result continued to a poor run for Sunderland, who have now lost their last six games on the spin and are seeing their hopes of a playoff spot collapsing.

Dodds though sees at least something of a positive as he feels at times, Sunderland were better than Southampton.

“I am not going to say we deserved to win because you don’t when you concede four goals, but there were periods of the game where we were better than Southampton”, Dodds told the media post match.

Sunderland are next in action at home against QPR as Dodds looks to stop the rot.

The Black Cats recently sacked Michael Beale and gave Dodds the job through to the end of the campaign.
