Former Liverpool and Sunderland defender Andrea Dossena has sprung a surprise by signing for League One side Leyton Orient.

The Italian full-back had been a free agent since parting ways with Sunderland in the summer and has penned a deal with Orient which runs through until the end of the season.

Dossena was snapped up by then-Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez from Udinese in 2008, but struggled to make the grade at Anfield.

He headed to Napoli in 2010, before returning to England with Sunderland in 2013.

At Leyton Orient the defender, who can also operate further down the left flank, links up with countryman Mauro Milanese.

Milanese, who bosses the League One side, was a left-back like Dossena in his playing days and turned out for a whole host of Italian sides, including Napoli, Parma and Inter.
