Turkish giants Trabzonspor were in the hunt for Rangers right-back James Tavernier before he put pen to paper on a contract extension with the Gers.

Rangers took time to convince Tavernier to put pen to paper on a new deal at Ibrox, but finally succeeded earlier this summer and the defender is now fully on board with Mark Warburton's project heading into the club's first season back in the Scottish Premiership.

But had Rangers not been able to convince Tavernier to sign a new deal, they would have fielded an approach from Trabzonspor, according to Turkish broadcaster Lig TV.

Tavernier's good performances and knack of getting forward to score key goals did not go unnoticed by Trabzonspor, who were eyeing the right-back being brought to Turkey.

Trabzonspor had a poor season last term, finishing a lowly 12th in the Turkish Super Lig and they are looking to rebuild this summer.

Tavernier joined the Gers last summer from Wigan Athletic and quickly made an impact north of the border.

The 24-year-old, who spent time in the youth ranks at Leeds United at the start of his career, has been dubbed the "Blue Cafu" by Rangers fans.
