Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has lauded the "amazing effort" of his players after they hung on against Hapoel Beer Sheva to book a spot in the Champions League group stage.

Rodgers took his side to Israel for the second leg of their playoff round tie with a comfortable three-goal advantage, after winning the first leg 5-2 at Celtic Park.

But it soon looked like it could be a tricky night for the visitors, though they did get out of jail when Hapoel Beer Sheva missed a penalty in the 16th minute.

The Israeli champions did get on the scoresheet soon afterwards, making it 1-0 in the 21st minute, while when they scored their second in the 48th minute, the Scottish giants were on the rack.

Celtic had to hold out against wave after wave of Hapoel Beer Sheva attacks, but managed to cling on and reach the Champions League group stage 5-4 on aggregate, making Rodgers proud in the process.

"It was probably the longest 90 mins I've faced as a coach", he told BT Sport.

"I thought Beer Sheva were outstanding, they had nothing to lose.

"But I have to congratulate my players because all the work we've been doing in pre-season is based around that mentality.

"Tonight was about resilience. It was an amazing effort from the players on the back of what they've been through before.

"I'm immensely proud", Rodgers added.

Celtic will now wait to discover who they will meet in the Champions League group stage.
