Martinez is Argentina’s number one and will be between the sticks when the Albiceleste take on Saudi Arabia in the first group game of their World Cup campaign next Tuesday.

He is also the undisputed number one for Aston Villa and is a hugely popular member of the squad because of his attitude and character.

The 30-year-old was in goal for Aston Villa’s win at Brighton last weekend despite nursing a slight groin injury.

He admitted that several of his friends asked him not to play in the game with the World Cup in mind, but Martinez was in the starting eleven.

The Argentinian stressed that he showed at the weekend how much he cares about Aston Villa.

He told The Athletic: “People were saying to me, ‘Don’t play’, because I have the World Cup.

“I was thinking, ‘What is the best thing for my career?’.

“But I love this club, man. I’m all in.

“I showed against Brighton that I am all in.”

Argentina have gone into the World Cup as one of the favourites and are unbeaten in 35 games; they last won the World Cup in 1986.
