The midfielder left Tottenham to join the Foxes in the last transfer window and he has been one of the best players in a dominant Leicester side in the Championship.

He had Premier League options on his table but he decided to join Enzo Maresca’s revolution at the King Power Stadium.

Winks scored his first goal for Leicester in their 2-1 win at QPR at the weekend and Piper conceded that he is pleased to see his move to the Foxes work out.

He admitted that given his ability, it was a risk for Winks to join Leicester and their attempt to get promoted back to the Premier League and insisted that he has been the best player in the Championship this season.

Piper said on the BBC’s When You’re Smiling Podcast: “He is not just a brilliant player on the pitch, he seems a really balanced kind of character and a guy who seems to know himself inside out.

“Just really pleased for him because it would have been a little bit of a risk for him.

“He could have gone to numerous other Premier League clubs but he decided to believe in the Leicester rebuild and the dream.

“Someone of his skill to drop out of the Premier League and come to the Championship was a risk really and he has been performing brilliantly.

“He probably is the best player in the Championship; I think he has been that good since joining Leicester.”

Winks has been at the heart of a Leicester side that have won 13 of their 14 Championship games so far and it remains to be seen if Tottenham come to regret letting him go.
