Former Sunderland star Danny Collins is of the view that the Black Cats have a good player in the shape of Leo Hjelde, who has joined from Leeds United.
The 20-year-old left-back made eight appearances for Leeds United’s senior team, but the Whites decided they were ready to let him go last month and he joined Sunderland.
At the weekend, Michael Beale handed Hjelde his Sunderland debut in their Championship game against Middlesbrough, which ended in a 1-1 scoreline.
Hjelde was out of action for a big part of the first half of the season due to an injury and Collins pointed out that the young left-back will need time to settle himself at Sunderland and get back to his full fitness.
The ex-Black Cats star also admitted that Hjelde impressed him in some moments of the game on Sunday and he believes that Sunderland have a player in him.
“He showed some good moments [on Sunday]”, Collins told Sunderland’s media.
“I think there is a player in there.
“It is going to take him time to find his feet really and his full fitness.
“But yes some good moments in the game for him to be honest.”
Sunderland are eyeing a playoff spot this season and Hjelde will be eager to aid the Wearsiders achieve their goal.
It remains to be seen if Leeds will come to regret letting Hjelde go.
