Marco Gabbiadini thinks that Sunderland sometimes need to put the ball into the opposition box to let the forwards attack instead of always relying on passing football to score goals.

Sunderland are eyeing promotion this season, but they have failed to be consistent so far in the Championship.

On Wednesday, they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of relegation-threatened Huddersfield Town, which saw them drop down to tenth place in the league table.

Michael Beale’s side failed to impress Gabbiadini with their performance on Wednesday and he thinks the Black Cats need to step away from always trying to play eye-catching football, which he termed purist.

And believes that Sunderland should try to put the ball in the opposition box and get their forwards in dangerous positions to score goals.

“One of our problems is that we try and play this sort of purist football and pass and score nice goals”, Gabbiadini said on BBC Radio Newcastle

“But sometimes you just have to get it in the box and get people in the danger areas and work a little bit harder.”

Sunderland have failed to register back-to-back wins under Beale so far this season and they are set to take on Tony Mowbray’s Birmingham City at the weekend.
