Former Celtic star Charlie Mulgrew has conceded that he did not expect the title race to change so soon in favour of Rangers but insisted that league titles are not won in February.

Rangers are currently sitting at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with a two-point lead over their Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Celtic’s performance levels have dropped since January and while they are unbeaten in nine games, more dropped points at home against Kilmarnock at the weekend infuriated the fans.

Mulgrew conceded that he did not expect the title race to shift so dramatically at this stage of the season but admitted that Celtic have looked poor for a number of weeks.

He did admit that Rangers now have confidence on their side due to Philippe Clement, but warned that no title races get decided in February.

Asked if he is surprised to see the title race change so quickly, the former Bhoy said on Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard: “Yes, slightly, but Celtic have been limping for a few games now.

“Just before the winter break, they looked like in their stride, they got a few results but since then, they have been limping over the line.

“Getting results at home against Ross County 1-0 and you thought it was going to happen at the weekend, but Kilmarnock scored.

“Rangers seem to have a bit of confidence with the new manager even though they have not been great in a lot of the games, they seem to know how to win.

“I didn’t expect it to move this quickly but there is a long way to go and there is still an Old Firm game to come before the split.

“Title races are never won in February.”

Rangers have a game against Hearts at Ibrox on Saturday while Celtic will visit Motherwell a day later.
