Former Southampton star Jo Tessem believes the win over Birmingham City on Saturday could change the mentality of the Saints team for the rest of the season.
Joe Aribo scored in the sixth minute of injury time to help Southampton beat Birmingham 4-3 at St. Andrew’s and win all three points in a thrilling encounter.
Saints had lost their previous two games and were faltering in their pursuit of an automatic promotion spot in the Championship this season.
Tessem feels that the win and the way they achieved the three points could surge a wave of positive vibes through the Southampton players and change their mentality for the campaign.
He conceded that it is vital that Saints win their next two games at home, against Preston and Sunderland, respectively, and continue to put pressure on the teams above them for the rest of the season.
Tessem said on BBC Radio Solent: “I think this could change the mental perspective of the Southampton team.
“Winning in this way always brings in positive vibes and sets us up so much nicer for the next two games, which is at home I believe.
“Can we get through those two games and get six points?
“Be in the mix now and put pressure on Leeds, put pressure on Leicester and put pressure on Ipswich as well because they faltered around Christmas but now, they are back in second.”
Southampton are sitting fourth in the table, five points behind Ipswich Town, who are occupying the last automatic promotion spot.
