Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Shay Given has sealed a move away from Manchester City to Aston Villa.

The 35-year-old shot-stopper was surplus to requirements at Eastlands and has inked a five-year deal with Villa; the amount paid by the Villa Park outfit for Given is unknown.

"Aston Villa is a huge club and I’m really exciting to be joining", Given told the Midlands club’s official website.

"It’s a new challenge and I’m eager to embrace it."

Villa had been on the lookout for an experienced goalkeeper after American Brad Friedel headed to join Tottenham Hotspur earlier this summer.

Alex McLeish, Villa boss, was quick to welcome the addition of Given, hailing the Irishman "one of the best goalkeepers in the business."
