Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has been left baffled by the way in which England bowed out of the European Under-21 Championship in Israel last night.
Spain Under-21 star De Gea is no stranger to the level of football practised in the English game, having spent two seasons with the Premier League champions and more than helped their title cause.
However, from his position in Group B at the continental tournament, England’s meek exit from Group A has seemed unbelievable, as the Young Lions emerged winless despite having played Norway and Israel apart from Italy.
De Gea, meanwhile, is keeping Spain’s hopes of defending their Under-21 title more than alive with two clean sheets ahead of tonight’s encounter against Holland.

And the 22-year-old said of his England counterparts to MUTV: "I’m surprised with England as I would have expected them to have put up more of a fight and win more points."
England had gone down 1-0 in their tournament opener, before a 3-1 defeat to Norway sealed their exit and Israel piled on the misery last night with a 1-0 win.
"I thought they would have been in the semi-finals, but that is football", De Gea added. "Sometimes these things happen."
