Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has stressed that he was not surprised by FC Porto’s quality last night.

The German champions suffered a shock 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Portuguese giants at the Estadio do Dragao in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Two early goals from former Chelsea man Ricardo Quaresma and a third from Jackson Martinez after the break put Porto firmly in the driver’s seat in the tie.

Guardiola admits that conceding two early goals away from home was not the ideal start for his side but believes Thiago Alcantara’s 28th minute strike might prove crucial in the tie.

The Bayern Munich boss stressed that Porto’s quality was never in question and he was not surprised by the level of football displayed by the underdogs in the tie but he stressed that his side will work hard to put things into place in the second leg at the Allianz Arena next week.

“This was a typical UEFA Champions League game. After ten minutes we were already 2-0 down which was obviously not good for us”, Guardiola told UEFA.

“We are down but we have six days to prepare for the next match – we will keep training and will try to play better in the second leg. Of course Thiago’s goal is important but it is not decisive.

“We were not surprised by Porto's start to the game. I knew we were going to face a very good team, we knew they had a good attack.

“The quality of this game was at the highest level, we are lucky to be in this phase of the competition.”
