The Dutchman has entered the final year of his contract at Liverpool and discussions over a new deal between the club and his representatives are yet to bear fruit.

Jurgen Klopp wants to keep the midfielder at Anfield as he has been a key player in the Reds squad and played the most number of minutes amongst all the Liverpool midfielders last season.

But Ronald Koeman has asked Barcelona to make a move for Wijnaldum and the Dutchman is said to have asked his compatriot to not sign a new contract at Liverpool.

And according to Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo, the Catalan giants are set to press the accelerator and push to land the 29-year-old midfielder this summer.

Barcelona are studying the options they have in trying to sign Wijnaldum and believe his contract situation means he could be available for a reasonable transfer fee.

Liverpool want to avoid an Emre Can like situation with the Dutchman and will sell him if he does not sign a new contract as they do not want to lose Wijnaldum on a free transfer next summer.

The midfielder’s departure could also open up the possibility of Liverpool signing Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich.

Liverpool hold an interest in the Spaniard but are waiting to sell players before attempting to sign him.
