After a strong start to their season under new boss Benitez, Everton have slumped to a terrible run of form in the Premier League.

The Toffees board, the players and the manager have all come under fire from the fans and some have already asked for Benitez to be sacked.

It has been claimed that Everton are lining up ex-Toffee Rooney as a potential replacement for the Spaniard if he is dismissed and former Sky Sports presenter Keys feels it would be a good move for the Merseyside giants.

Keys stressed that Rooney is someone that can inspire the Everton players to turn their fortunes around and urged the club to make moves to bring him in as soon as possible and replace Benitez.

“Now you’re talking”, Keys wrote on Twitter reacting to news that Rooney could return to Everton to take over as manager.

“Get someone [like] Wayne Rooney in who understands the club and will get players wanting to wear the jersey again – before it’s too late and Finch Farm becomes entirely Spanish.

“It’ll cost a fortune to unravel then.”

Rooney is currently managing Championship side Derby County, who are in administration and are likely to suffer relegation to League One having been hit with a 21-point deduction by the EFL.
